My opponent, Rep. Bergman is the highest-ranking military member of Congress. He should be ashamed; Not only is he an ineffective politician, his continued support of Trump undermines our democracy.
Twenty-four people inside Trump's inner circle have turned on him. Republicans who haven't, such as Rep. Jack Bergman, don't get a free pass for trying to save McCarthy. Trump has his hands all over the chaos in Washington caused by MAGA extremists, and my opponent is still aligning himself with the disgraced former president.
Make no mistake. If it were true that "politics in Washington is broken," we would have seen this destruction when Democrats were in charge. The GOP alone is broken, their civil war is wreaking havoc on our Nation, and Jack Bergman's actions and extremist affiliations fuel this dumpster fire.
If our Representative was genuinely focused on serving the American people, he would denounce Trumpism, rise above the division, and get to work for the American people.
Instead, he's standing by his man. "A person that has no idea what America stands for and has no idea what America is all about", according to John Kelly, Trump's longest-serving White House Chief of Staff.
Can Bergman align with Trump, work with extremists, and still get things done? No. This year, a mere 16 bills have been signed into law, and it's unclear which ones could benefit our district. As for Bergman's actions, he has consistently voted against us.
In this congressional session, he has sponsored 18 bills, out of which only one has become law — the naming of a VA clinic. He has also cosponsored 135 bills, with only one becoming law — the Marine Corps commemorative coin act.
It's just not enough. Good legislation is about being proactive and productive and avoiding petty political squabbles that don't benefit the American people. Bergman is making no effort to distance himself from the source of all the chaos in Washington, and Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula deserve change.
