WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Heartbeat Protection Act, co-sponsored by my opponent, Jack Bergman, makes it a crime for a physician to perform an abortion after six weeks, punishable by a five year prison sentence.
The proposed law would apply to pregnancies as early as six weeks, when women often don't realize they're pregnant.
There would be no exceptions for rape or incest.
The only exception is to save the life of a mother endangered by a physical — but not psychological or emotional — disorder, illness, or condition.
The dangerous bill would have taken away reproductive freedom from virtually every woman in the Nation.
As a family physician with a profound reverence for life, I believe a woman's right to choose is fundamental to American liberty. A patient's room is far too small for a woman, her doctor, and the US government.
