• We'll cap defense profits at 15%, saving $100 billion. Our nation's security shouldn't be a profit-driven industry.

• We'll adopt a single-payer healthcare system like Medicare for All, saving a staggering $500 billion. That's money we can put to much better use.

And with these savings, we can invest in our future:

• We'll add dental, vision, and hearing benefits for everyone—because good health shouldn't stop at your teeth, eyes, or ears: $40 billion.

• We'll provide universal Pre-K for 3- and 4-year-olds, giving every child a strong start: $35 billion.

• We'll offer two years of postsecondary training or education, opening doors for young people and adults alike: $70 billion.

• We'll subsidize childcare, making it affordable for every family: $69 billion.

• We'll reduce prescription drug costs, ending the days of choosing between medicine and food: $31 billion.

• We'll provide paid family and medical leave, so no one has to choose between a paycheck and caring for a loved one: $71 billion.

• We'll enhance border security in an effective and humane way: $20 billion.

• We'll provide federal housing support, ensuring everyone has a place to call home: $54 billion.

• And we'll reduce the federal debt, securing our financial future: $295 billion.

Imagine what this could mean for our families — more money in their pockets, better services, and a brighter future for our children. We can make these smart investments without raising taxes. We're offering real, concrete solutions, not rhetoric, not platitudes.

I'm ready to fight for what our district needs — affordable housing, childcare, education, and healthcare for all, especially reproductive rights. Family sustainable wages, thriving small businesses and local farms, and an economic system that works for everyone, not just the select few.

I'm eager to bring my expertise and experience to the table to make it happen. I've lived in Northern Michigan and the UP for nearly 40 years, and embedded in me is the grit, tenacity, and perseverance to get it done.

I have been involved in politics throughout my life, every other year voting for the Democratic candidate for the House of Representatives. I met them all and often working on their campaigns. None of them has compared to Bob. He is the best candidate for this office that I have ever met.

As an economist that has specialized in issue of pensions, Social Security and how tax policy influences the level of employment, I have been involved in advising members of Congress by testify to the Joint Economic Committee and answering questions from various legislators.

When talking members of Congress I have found for the most part they listen for a while and then they are thinking if they like the outcome of the suggestion. Understanding the details takes too much effort and honestly, most do not have the capacity to do it. They trust their staff to do the thinking.

Bob is different. He is smart and listens to a presentation and push to understand it, and he does this on all issues. He is a unique politician. He has spent the last two years campaigning across the district and explaining his positions to voters. He has thought them through, is clear about what they are, and articulates them well. And they are his, not some consultant. If you look at his website, he has over 1,200 words on education. His two opponents have 160 and 76. On the environment, he has 564 words that include discussion of six acts that he supports and four agencies he would work with to accomplish this. His two opponents have 79 and 125 words.

I met Bob two years ago during his first campaign. For the past two years I have been discussing economic issues with him regularly and we have become friends. He would ask my opinion on a specific issue, and we might “debate” it for days. I would send him things to read, and he would reply in a day with well thought out questions. He is open to revise his positions. For example, he now agrees that a correctly formulated carbon tax is one of the best ways to fight climate change.

I have learned much from him about health care issues. His understanding of how we could improve medical care for the average person is deep and from his years of experience of seeing how it can be improved.

We both agree in the inherent worth and dignity of every person. I so admire his belief that the only way democracy will survive is if good people run for office everywhere.

Sam Williamson

Sam Williamson is a retired professor of economics having taught at three of the top 50 ranked universities of the world. In his area of economic history he was the co-founder of the Cliometric Society, and creator of EH.Net and MeasuringWorth.com. He ran all three for many years.

In 2004, he was one of the pension economists leading the debate against the (stupid idea of) privatizing Social Security.

Sam has been a voting resident of Michigan's First District for 20 years.

Respecting tribal sovereignty and addressing inadequate housing are also crucial. Efforts to preserve Native cultures and traditions are vital.

I am committed to listening, collaborating, learning from tribal leaders, and finding solutions with federal support. Attending the Baraga Powwow today and previously in Marquette, as well as drumming on the grandfather drum in Mackinaw City, were unforgettable experiences that deepened my respect and commitment. The act of grandfather drumming, symbolizing the heartbeat of Mother Earth, unites the community and connects us to our ancestors, embodying unity, healing, and tradition.

The regalia at the KBIC Maawanji'dig Pow Wow is always a powerful reminder for me of the importance of our tribal communities, how this land is the traditional, ancestral, and contemporary homeland of the Anishinaabe.

It's incumbent upon all who seek to represent Michigan's first district to be better stewards of the land, air, and water by respecting treaty rights, and committing to work not just at tribal communities, but with them, at the table, for the benefit of all.

I began my medical career honored to serve and live in the Navajo Nation for three years. That experience taught me the importance of serving with humility and dedication. As your Representative, I will be proud and honored to serve our tribal communities with the same spirit.

It's a common-sense solution to the lack of affordable and accessible healthcare rampant in our country. In Congress, I would be honored to be a subject-matter expert on this crucial initiative.

This plan, a single-payer system where you decide who your medical provider is and what clinic you go to, would save lives and save $500 billion annually, mainly by reducing administrative costs.

Medicare, like the VA, runs efficiently with administrative costs of around 2%, compared to insurance companies' 12-18%. None of that spending does anything to help you stay healthy and solve your medical problems.

We could fund subsidized child care, provide early childhood education for all 3—and 4-year-olds, increase funding for housing initiatives, and offer prepaid postsecondary training and education for all Americans. There would be enough left over for other initiatives, including paying off the national debt, border security, or reducing taxes.

Here are some of the major problems that Medicare for All can address, which private insurance can't:

• Everybody is covered, and nobody is left out from birth to death.

• You have peace of mind knowing you can receive healthcare whenever needed, regardless of your circumstances—no more surprise bills, out-of-network concerns, or staying in a lousy job just for the benefits.

• Healthcare justice for the entire nation, meaning no one will be uninsured or underinsured.

• You have the ultimate freedom to choose your medical provider, clinic, or hospital without worrying about out-of-network concerns.

• It will cost less than our current system, end medical debt and bankruptcies, and reduce administrative waste by $500 billion annually.

• Businesses will no longer struggle to provide insurance to their employees and can focus on their core mission. Lower health costs make businesses more competitive domestically and internationally, making it easier to start a new business without the complications, expenses, and worries of obtaining employee insurance benefits.

• Corporations will no longer profit off the sick, and pharmaceutical companies will no longer be able to price gouge.

• Healthcare professionals will no longer incur the cost of dealing with so many different plans, rules, and forms.

• Power to negotiate pricing for medications,

• Preventive care and timely intervention can keep health problems from developing or worsening, making the need for expensive treatment less likely.

• Provide access to home and community-based care for all who need it.

• Guarantee coverage for dental, vision, and hearing services.

• Eliminate co-payments, deductibles, and premiums.

• Cover long-term care.

• Increase payments to medical providers.

• Save rural hospitals.

Medicare for All (M4A) is a single-payer health system for everyone in the U.S. It could save $500 billion annually. Here's how:

Less Paperwork and Administrative Costs

Current System: Many private insurers mean lots of paperwork and different rules, with private insurers spending about 12-18% on administrative costs.

Medicare for All: One system reduces paperwork and administrative expenses to about 2%, saving around $200 billion annually.

Lower Costs for Doctors and Hospitals

Current System: Doctors and hospitals spend a lot of money dealing with multiple insurance companies. They must hire staff to handle different billing codes, pre-authorizations, and payment disputes.

Medicare for All: Only one insurance to deal with means simpler billing processes, fewer disputes, and less need for administrative staff. This can save doctors and hospitals another $100 billion a year.

Cheaper Medicines

Current System: Drug prices are high because private insurers can't negotiate well.

Medicare for All: The government can negotiate lower drug prices, saving about $100 billion a year.

Better Health Information Sharing

Current System: Many different systems mean doctors can't easily share patient info.

Medicare for All: One system makes sharing info easy, saving $50 billion annually.

More Preventive Care

Current System: People avoid preventive care due to cost, leading to expensive treatments later.

Medicare for All: Everyone can afford preventive care, saving $50 billion a year.

Total Savings

By reducing paperwork and administrative costs, lowering costs for doctors and hospitals, negotiating drug prices, improving information sharing, and increasing preventive care, we can save $500 billion a year.

Despite facing harsh weather and limited market access, these farmers are crucial for local economies and food security. The passage of the 2024 Farm Bill is vital for providing financial support, crop insurance, and market access, helping them overcome challenges and sustain their livelihoods.

Chronic breakdowns have caused significant disruptions and hardships, but we see this challenge as an opportunity for positive change and community improvement.

Healthcare access on Sugar Island is vital. With no medical facilities on the island, residents depend heavily on the ferry to attend crucial medical appointments and handle acute medical problems. We understand the stress this causes and see enhancing the ferry service as essential to ensuring all residents can access the healthcare they need without worry.

Reliable ferry service is also crucial in education. Over 100 students rely on the ferry to commute to school. When the ferry malfunctions, it impacts their attendance and participation in important educational events. By improving ferry reliability, we can ensure that our students receive the quality education they deserve without interruption.

With local, state, and federal support, the Eastern Upper Peninsula Transit Authority (EUPTA) can rise to meet this challenge. By working together, we can meet the needs of island residents.

Sugar Island, Neebish Island, and Drummond Island residents deserve dependable and adequate ferry services. Jodi Decker and I pledge to advocate for improved infrastructure and services. Like everyone else, Islanders deserve equal access to reliable transportation for emergencies, work, and school.

We are inspired by our community's resilience and spirit and are committed to making a positive difference. Together, we can ensure that all residents feel connected and supported.

No matter which island residents live on, you should have a reliable ferry service to get across for emergencies or the day-to-day routines of work and school. Tourist season is upon us. These islands need their ferries.

Daily meal expenses for Congressmembers are limited to $79, and lodging caps vary depending on the month, from $172 to $258 per day.

Rep. Jack Bergman (R-Mich.) is the program's top spender. In 2023, he was reimbursed more than $32,000 for lodging and nearly $12,000 for meals. These funds come from the Congressional budget, which taxpayers fund.

There is a significant disparity. As a public servant, Rep. Bergman receives financial assistance from taxpayers to cover his DC apartment rent. His primary residence in Louisiana is valued at $750,000, and his summer cottage in the UP is valued at $1 million. Bergman's financial stability with multiple pensions raises questions about the need for such high reimbursements.

It's disheartening enough that by claiming a "homestead" in the UP, Rep. Bergman is exempt from paying school taxes to Gogebic County, depriving local public schools of $4,754 annually. This is a significant loss for a community where many struggle with poverty and every dollar counts.

Why can't Rep. Bergman make it financially with his sizable military pension, Social Security, private pension, investments, and $174,000 salary? Does he need taxpayers' help paying for his meals?

While Rep. Bergman enjoys a comfortable financial situation, our district's constituents, who make 20% less per household than the national average, grapple with the high cost of living. Our district is plagued by childhood poverty and low wages that can't sustain a family. The residents he represents live in counties with the highest unemployment rates in Michigan, where finding affordable housing, childcare, or medical care is a constant struggle.

Last cycle, Rep. Jack Bergman nearly outspent the entire Michigan delegation combined in taxpayer-funded self promotion. This cycle, he outspent all 435 members of the House in taxpayer-funded lodging and food reimbursements. We need a change. Our Congressman isn't working for Northern Michigan and the UP. You're working for him, and he's working for himself.

EXAMPLE OF CHALLENGES / RESPONSES

Callie Barr is challenging every signature the Lorinser campaign procured from Jan. 2023 to Oct. 2023.

There is no 180-day shelf life on Partisan Nominating Petitions. Barr incorrectly references a requirement for Nonpartisan Qualifying Petitions or candidacies without party affiliation. The statute does not apply to Democratic Congressional primaries.

Barr challenges a signer by claiming they are deceased.

The voter is alive and registered to vote. They recently voted in February. Their voter information is accurate and up-to-date with the Secretary of State. They are not deceased. Barr's claim is patently false.

Barr challenges a signature by claiming that Acme is a county, not a township.

Barr is incorrect. Acme is a township in Grand Traverse County, not a county.

Barr challenges an address using an election code that would claim Escanaba isn't a city in Delta County.

Barr is unequivocally wrong. Escanaba is in Delta County.

Barr mistakenly asserts that abbreviating location names is not permitted.

According to the election code, standard abbreviations, e.g., MQT and TC, are allowed.

Barr claims that residents who live on islands, e.g. Sugar Island, are "not registered" because their entries included the name of their island township.

Island townships are just as valid as inland townships.

Barr is challenging entire sheets because, according to her, the circulator's signature and printed name included different middle initials.

The printed name has a printed initial, and the signature uses a cursive version. The letters are identifiably the same.

Barr highlights minor date discrepancies, claiming some signers added "20" in front of "24" to correct the date-year to "2024". She's challenging these individual entries because they did not initial these alleged modifications.

According to petition instructions, circulators are encouraged to ask signers to fill in omissions. The election code does not instruct writing an initial.

Barr challenges every signer who included their township and city because the address field asks for the township or the city.

The corresponding election code instructs signers, "Do not write the county and the city/township." By including their city and township, signers offered more information about their address but did not provide prohibited information, such as their county.

Barr falsely claims some signers were not registered voters.

For most, Barr appears to be using an unofficial flawed database. To the best of its ability, the Lorinser campaign validated official registration statuses with the Secretary of State and discarded any known unregistered voters before filing. Most of these signatures have no discernible reason to be challenged.

Barr is challenging some signers for illegible handwriting.

Petition law states that an individual's unique signature does not need to be legible; only their information does. If the information had been illegible, the Lorinser campaign would not have been able to verify their registration, and it verified these nominators and their addresses.

Barr's challenge includes a complaint that Lorinser gathered over the maximum of 2,000 signatures.

The Lorinser campaign knowingly and willfully only gathered the maximum number of signatures. Lorinser discarded any received above that quantity, and records clearly show his total official submission was below the maximum.

Barr contends that circulators restarted writing their address lines after crossing out their own mistakes. She is challenging entire pages of signatures because the circulator didn't initial those strikethroughs.

These are not infractions. There isn't even an appropriate code to reference the claim. Initialing strikethroughs may be expected in contracts between two parties, but no code or law states that electors need to initial strikethroughs on nominating petitions.

Barr, an attorney challenging Lorinser in the Democratic election on Aug. 6, targeted more than half of Lorinser's nomination petition signatures. In May, after review, the BOE rejected her claims in their entirety and recommended that the Board of State Canvassers do the same.

On Friday, in a unanimous vote, the Canvassers approved Bob Lorinser for the August ballot.

Christopher Trebilcock, an attorney for Lorinser, explains that Barr based her attempt to disqualify Lorinser on her "fundamental misunderstanding of the Michigan Election Law." He argued it's "improper," "lacks any credibility," and should be "summarily rejected."

Lorinser's campaign manager, Kevin Numerick, said Barr blatantly and intentionally disregarded election code.

"While legitimate challenges are essential to combat fraud, Ms. Barr abused this process as a dirty political weapon," said Numerick. "She tried to convolute the law by challenging as many signatures as possible to disqualify Bob Lorinser from the ballot, regardless of merit.

"This demonstrates poor political judgment, maliciousness, and incompetence. We're pleased with the BOE's evaluation, appreciate the unanimous approval from the Board of Canvassers and look forward to appearing on the ballot in August and November."

Numerick said Barr's action against Lorinser was a desperate political tactic. It was an attack on Lorinser's integrity and an insult to voters because it attempted to discard the will of over a thousand legitimate electors without discernible cause, Numerick stated.

"Callie Barr's failed attempt to disenfranchise voters should not go unanswered. We do not need more politicians who try to abuse the Democratic process.

"Character is everything, and we need people like Bob Lorinser, someone who prioritizes honesty and integrity above all else and strives to earn the Democratic nomination through merit, not manipulation."

It's been an honor to spend my career on the frontlines of women's healthcare, and lately I've been moved witnessing firsthand the power and determination of women leaders in our district.

Soon, we'll be attending Planned Parenthood's ‘Choice Event’ and we're hosting a meet and greet with Christiana Reynolds and Kelli Van GinHoven, two prolific candidates in Delta County.

One of the key aspects of our campaign is coordinating with other remarkable leaders, particularly women running for state and local races. Together, we can empower the voices of those who are leading the fight for a better future in and out of the doctor's office.

A patient's room is much too small for a woman, her doctor, and the entire state or federal government. Bodily autonomy and medical privacy are paramount, and although reproductive care is a top political priority, our efforts don't end there. We're working to:

• End violence against women

• Advocate for maternity leave and childcare

• Dismantle gender stereotypes

• Promote workplace and education equality

Our mission is growing support every day. The "Women for Dr. Bob" group now has over 600 members. This group could easily be called "Dr. Bob for Women”, because a major part of my campaign is to fight for the American liberties that all genders deserve. This of course includes the fundamental right to choose when and how to start a family.

I have four granddaughters — and they shouldn't have to fight the battles their grandmothers already won. They are why I am in this fight.

LANSING, Mich. — In an effort to disqualify Bob Lorinser from the August ballot, his Democratic opponent, Callie Barr, filed a frivolous challenge against the validity of Lorinser's nomination petitions with the Michigan Bureau of Elections.

Barr based the vast majority of the challenge on her false assumption that circulators must collect all signatures in a 180-day window before filing. However, this requirement does not exist for partisan Congressional candidates.

The law is crystal clear. A 180-day statute applies to 'Nonpartisan Qualifying Petitions,' a completely different type of petition for another kind of candidacy, such as a justice without party affiliation. It does not pertain to 'Partisan Nominating Petitions' required for Democrats and Republicans running for federal office. Ms. Barr grossly misinterpreted an election code that is not applicable to the Democratic Congressional Primary.

Callie Barr's attempt to disqualify Bob Lorinser from the primary ballot is based on a "fundamental misunderstanding of the Michigan Election Law," it's "improper," "lacks any credibility," and should be "summarily rejected."

With other frivolous complaints listed in detail below, Barr also attempted to invalidate the signatures of many qualified registered electors.

The Lorinser campaign vigorously defended nearly every nomination that Barr challenged. Barr filed hundreds of challenges to signatures without any legitimate cause. It appears her sole goal was to contest enough nominations to disqualify Lorinser, regardless of their merit.

Ms. Barr used extremely inaccurate data, a flawed unofficial database, and irresponsible misinterpretations of the election code in her effort to discard and disenfranchise voters.

Most egregiously, she falsely claimed that a signer was deceased at the time of signing. The Lorinser campaign proved to the Bureau of Elections that her allegation is patently untrue. These voters have active public voter files with the Secretary of State, and Barr has no discernible reason to challenge many of these signatures.

The challenge is not only a callous attack on Lorinser's integrity but also on the integrity of the Democratic process.

Bob Lorinser is dedicated to running a positive campaign and remains committed to maintaining an open and honest dialogue with the public. He wants the political debate to focus solely on the issues that matter and each candidate's character. It is essential we allow voters to choose the candidate best suited to improve the lives of hardworking people in Michigan's 1st District.

MARQUETTE, Mich. — Bob Lorinser, the Democratic candidate for the US Congress, has received a significant endorsement from Hon. Rep. Stephen Adamini.
